Can ChatGPT design REAL, working 3D printed replacement parts? I put AI-generated CAD to the test by recreating two broken household components: a dishwasher lower-rack wheel and a spring-loaded bifold closet door roller. Watch me measure, print in PETG, troubleshoot, and install both.
Here is the wheel on Makerworld: https://makerworld.com/en/models/3422...
And here is the closet roller: https://makerworld.com/en/models/3432...
This isn't a one-prompt miracle. You'll see what worked, what failed, and how multiple rounds of plain-English feedback helped turn imperfect AI CAD models into functional parts. A real-world guide to ChatGPT 3D printing, reverse engineering, and everyday repairs.
🔧 PROJECT 1: DISHWASHER LOWER-RACK WHEEL
My Bosch dishwasher needed a replacement rack wheel. I used reference images, caliper measurements, and ChatGPT to design a replacement. The first versions had problems: the mounting hole was too small, the hub needed to be recessed, and the clip didn't hold firmly enough. After five versions, the wheel assembled, rolled, clipped into place, and stayed installed.
🔩 PROJECT 2: BIFOLD CLOSET DOOR ROLLER + REPAIR BRACKET
This one was harder: a multi-part, spring-loaded roller assembly with a sleeve, pin, wheel, retainer, and spring. I challenged ChatGPT to make it completely 3D printable, without purchasing metal springs or extra hardware for the internal mechanism. The first spring snapped and small snap-fits failed. A revised coil spring, larger pin, and threaded caps produced a working roller. I also designed a repair bracket to reinforce my cracked closet door. The replacement worked, though its spring compressed less than the commercial unit.

FAQ: Can ChatGPT replace CAD skills for 3D printing?
It can help generate mechanical parts from descriptions and measurements, but you'll still need to validate dimensions, check files in your slicer, test physical fit, and revise as needed. This video shows the real design-to-print feedback loop, not guaranteed first-try perfection.
