Big Coal Train Easing Down Horseshoe Curve Mountain With Manned Helper Units & DPU Locomotives. Norfolk Southern Trains At Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania. Testing Inclined Cable Railway. Coal Train, Mixed Freight Train & Intermodal Trains On The NS Pittsburgh Line. This is my first trip to Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania in 2 years. We walked up the steps to the viewing area since the funicular was out of service. I was lucky to catch it on a test run. It has been out of service for years although it did run for a short time earlier this year. We see it run later in the video. The first train is an intermodal coming up the hill. You can see it wrapping around the visitor viewing area. We take a look around the area and then a heavy loaded coal train comes down the hill with 6 locomotives holding it back as it approaches Altoona. This train has 2 locomotives on the front, 2 DPU locomotives in the middle and 2 helper locomotives on the rear. That was a huge pile of coal! Then we see a mixed freight coming down the hill with a locomotive on the front and 3 on the rear. I believe the units on the back are a combination of DPU and Manned locomotives. Leave a comment if you know for sure. This train has some interesting freight cars. It had some gondola cars that were modified and had a side dump car. It also had a car that had the word Moses painted on it. I was talking to a visitor about the funicular ( inclined railway ). He was telling me how difficult it is to maintain it and how hard it is to find parts for it. While we were talking about it they ran a test run of it and I was able to film it. That was pretty lucky. It's unknown when it will run again. The last train is an intermodal going down the hill. It wasn't a very busy day on the railroad the day that we were there but I think the coal train and the manifest made up for it. Those were some awesome trains. The Amtrak train in this video near the end was filmed after it came down from Horseshoe Curve. I filmed it approaching the "Brickyard" in Altoona. We got some pretty good trains.
