Pastor Allen Victor taught from Matthew 23 and examined Jesus’ strong warning against hypocrisy among the scribes and Pharisees. He explained that a hypocrite was someone who acted or pretended to be someone they were not, and he emphasized that Christians were called to be genuine rather than simply putting on a religious appearance. Pastor Allen showed how Jesus confronted religious leaders who taught others to follow burdensome rules while failing to practice what they preached. He challenged believers not to turn personal convictions, traditions, or preferences into commands from God.
Pastor Allen then addressed the danger of seeking the praise of people through titles, positions, appearances, ministry, worship, giving, or public prayer. He explained that Christian service was meant to focus on Christ rather than personal recognition, and that ministry should flow from a heart that desired to serve others. He also warned against hidden agendas, particularly when ministry became focused on money, popularity, church growth, or personal influence rather than leading people to Christ.
He encouraged believers to be careful about making promises they could not keep, especially promises that claimed God would do something He had not promised. Pastor Allen emphasized that Christians were to let their yes be yes and their no be no, while representing Christ faithfully before others. He then explained how the Pharisees had focused on outward religious practices while neglecting the weightier matters of justice, mercy, and faith. He challenged the church to move beyond debating Scripture and instead demonstrate God’s love by caring for people, ministering to those in need, and reaching the lost.
Pastor Allen also examined Jesus’ description of the Pharisees as people who cleaned the outside while leaving the inside unclean. He emphasized that genuine transformation began within through repentance, honesty, confession, and dependence upon God’s grace. He reminded believers that everyone had struggles and that Christians should be careful not to judge and condemn others as though they were incapable of falling themselves. Instead, believers were called to restore those who stumbled with gentleness and humility.
As the chapter concluded, Pastor Allen highlighted Jesus’ compassion toward Jerusalem. Even while Jesus strongly confronted hypocrisy, He mourned over those who had rejected Him and desired to gather and protect them. Pastor Allen concluded by reminding the church that everyone had a tendency toward hypocrisy and needed to allow God’s Word to correct and cleanse them. The message called believers to live consistently both inside and outside the church, to walk humbly before the Lord, and to allow God’s grace and love to shape their lives.
