Step inside the studio with visual artist Grace Lynne Haynes as she shares the story behind There Seems No Doubt, a new limited edition print with ART FOR CHANGE. Created as part of ART FOR CHANGE’s ongoing series of limited edition prints, There Seems No Doubt invites viewers into Haynes’s imaginative world, where fantasy and reality converge and world-building becomes a space for creative and cultural liberation. At the center of the work is a recurring female figure who serves as the protagonist in an ever-unfolding narrative. Rendered in pitch black, the figure expresses the fullness, presence, mystery, and opacity of the color. Drawing on symbolic traditions including West African masks and ancient Egyptian art, Haynes uses abstraction and the side profile to partially obscure her subject’s features, creating a figure that feels both familiar and otherworldly. In this artist studio visit, Grace Lynne Haynes discusses the ideas behind There Seems No Doubt, including Afrofuturism, speculative world-building, symbolism, costume, wings, portals, and the environments that make up her expanding visual cosmology. Through her practice, Haynes imagines alternate futures for people of African descent, creating images that invite us into new worlds while suggesting that something extraordinary exists just beyond our own. For this limited edition series, Haynes will hand-embellish twelve prints with unique elements, extending the narrative of the original work and allowing each print to become a distinct part of her evolving universe.
