Undetermined Coefficients for Second Order Linear Nonhomogeneous Differential Equations with Constant Coefficients
In this lesson, we introduce and explain the Method of Undetermined Coefficients, an important technique for solving second order linear nonhomogeneous ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients.
The method is used to obtain the particular solution of a nonhomogeneous differential equation after determining the complementary solution of its associated homogeneous equation.
We begin by distinguishing between homogeneous and nonhomogeneous differential equations and then develop a systematic approach to solving nonhomogeneous equations using undetermined coefficients.
Topics Covered in This Lesson
1. Introduction to second order linear homogeneous and nonhomogeneous differential equations.
2. Finding the complementary solution (yc) by solving the auxiliary or characteristic equation.
3. Constructing the trial particular solution (yp).
4. Choosing the appropriate trial function based on the form of the nonhomogeneous term.
5. Understanding overlap between the complementary solution and the assumed particular solution.
6. Modifying the trial solution when overlap occurs.
7. Differentiating the assumed particular solution and substituting it into the original differential equation.
8. Determining the unknown coefficients.
9. Constructing the general solution using:
y = yc + yp
Common Forms of Trial Particular Solutions
We also discuss how to choose the appropriate trial solution for different types of nonhomogeneous terms, including:
Polynomial functions.
Exponential functions.
Sine and cosine functions.
Products of polynomial and trigonometric functions.
Combinations of polynomial and exponential functions.
Worked Example
We consider the differential equation:
y’’ + 2y’ = 4x - 6e^(-2x)
We first solve the associated homogeneous equation to obtain the complementary solution. We then construct an appropriate trial particular solution, taking care to eliminate overlap with the complementary solution.
This example illustrates an important modification required when the assumed particular solution contains terms that are already present in the complementary solution.

By the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
Identify second order linear nonhomogeneous differential equations with constant coefficients.
Determine the complementary solution.
Select an appropriate trial particular solution.
Recognize and eliminate overlap.
Apply the method of undetermined coefficients systematically.
Obtain the general solution of a nonhomogeneous differential equation.
