A cooking show on television held up five dollars a serving as an affordable meal, and I sat at my kitchen table and did the math the way a senior on SNAP has to. Starting October 1, 2026, the smallest food stamp benefit for somebody living alone is $25 a month, which is about 83 cents a day. So one of those plates would cost that senior six days of eating. So this video goes two ways. The first is the kitchen I grew up in, where a Monday pot of beans and a pan of cornbread fed us half the week, where eggs got stretched over rice and potatoes, and where one chicken lasted from Sunday to Wednesday. If all you have is a hot plate, there is something in here for you too. The second is the food stamp rules for seniors that nobody ever sat down and walked most of us through. How getting the heating help changes the way they count your light bill. Why that income chart online stops applying once you're past sixty. What goes in your medical envelope, starting with the Part B premium, which runs $202.90 a month in 2026. Why your house and your pension don't count against you. And where the Medicare Savings Program and Extra Help fit in with your food stamps. I also talk about the "extra check on October first" that's going around (there isn't one), the fear that food stamps come after your house (they don't), and what to do when your letter looks wrong. Asking isn't begging. You paid into this. Tell me in the comments what pot your mother kept on the stove.
