Steely Dan - "Third World Man" & "The Last Mall"- It's Double Dan Day VI - Nick & Knarf Re-Reactions

Hi...we're Nick & Knarf. Today, it's Double Dan Day VI in our ongoing series of salutes to the great, great Steely Dan!! We're Re-Reacting to two great songs!!!...first, from the album "Gaucho", it's the dark, moody "Third World Man"....and, next, from their 9th, and final, studio album "Everything Must Go", it's the catchy cautionary tale for all shoppers...."The Last Mall"! "Gaucho" is Steely Dan's seventh studio album, released on November 21, 1980, by MCA Records. The sessions for "Gaucho" represent the band's typical penchant for studio perfectionism and obsessive recording technique. To record the album, the band used at least 42 different musicians, spent over a year in the studio, and far exceeded the original monetary advance given by the record label. Dissatisfied with some of the session work, and needing a final song for the album, Donald Fagan went back to the vaults from earlier album sessions and found the tapes for a song called “Were You Blind That Day.” The lyrics were changed and the new track, “Third World Man,” was added to "Gaucho. In 1982, "Gaucho" won the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording and received Grammy nominations for Album of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The album also went multi-platinum. "Everything Must Go" is the ninth studio album by Steely Dan. It was released on June 10, 2003, by Reprise Records, and was the band's second album following their 20-year studio hiatus, spanning 1980 through 2000, when they released "Two Against Nature". "Everything Must Go" is the band's most recent studio album, and the last with founding member Walter Becker, before his death in 2017. “The Last Mall” is a cautionary tale of impending doom for the last artifice of American consumerism. This is "the big goodbye", the last call before meeting the blood orange sky when the plug is pulled. A terrific opening song from a very underappreciated Steely Dan album, which charted at No. 9 on The Billboard Top 200 in 2003.
