It is the core of the Buddha's teaching. If you understand this, you understand Buddhism. The Buddha said: "One who sees Dependent Origination, sees the Dhamma. One who sees the Dhamma, sees Dependent Origination."The basic principle is very simple and is explained in one sentence:When this exists, that comes to be. With the arising of this, that arises. When this does not exist, that does not come to be. With the cessation of this, that ceases.Imasmin sati, idam hoti. Imassa uppada, idam uppajjati. Imasmin asati, idam na hoti. Imassa nirodha, idam nirujjhati. It means nothing exists independently. Everything exists because of causes and conditions. Nothing is created by a creator, nothing happens by random chance. Everything is a chain of cause and effect. To explain how our suffering, our life, our entire Samsara works, the Buddha explained it through 12 links. We call it Dwadasha Nidana - The Twelvefold Chain.Let me explain you each link very simply, like a story of one life, and also like the story of Samsara.1. AVIJJA (Ignorance) This is the root. Avijja does not mean lack of information. It means not knowing the Four Noble Truths. Not knowing that life is suffering (Dukkha), not knowing the cause of suffering, not knowing that suffering can end, and not knowing the path to end suffering. Not knowing Anicca (impermanence), Dukkha, Anatta (non-self). Because we don't see reality as it is, we live in delusion. Like a person walking in darkness.Because of this ignorance, we do things.2. SANKHARA (Volitional Formations / Karmic Formations) Because of Avijja, we create Sankhara. These are our intentional actions - through body, speech, and mind. Good actions, bad actions. All our karma. If a man in darkness thinks there is a man in front of him and hits him, that hitting is Sankhara. It is born from ignorance.Sankhara is like the seeds we plant. Every action with intention becomes a seed in our mind.3. VINNANA (Consciousness) Because of Sankhara, Vinnana arises. This is the rebirth-linking consciousness. The karmic seed has to land somewhere to sprout. The consciousness that takes the karmic energy from the past life to the new life. Think of it like a river of consciousness flowing from one life to another, carrying all our karma. When a person dies, the last consciousness dies and, conditioned by the Sankhara, a new consciousness arises in a new mother's womb.4. NAMARUPA (Name and Form / Mind and Matter) Because of Vinnana, Namarupa arises. In a womb, when consciousness enters, mind and matter develop. Nama is the mental part: feeling, perception, intention, contact, attention. Rupa is the physical part: the body, the four great elements - earth, water, fire, air. Together they form the embryo, the human being. You cannot have a body without a mind, and you cannot have a mind without a body at this stage.5. SALAYATANA (The Six Sense Bases) Because of Namarupa, the six sense bases arise. As the embryo grows into a baby, the six senses develop: eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. These are the six doors through which we experience the world. Without a body and mind, there are no doors.6. PHASSA (Contact) Because of the six sense bases, contact arises. When there are three things together - the sense organ (eye), the sense object (form), and consciousness (eye-consciousness) - then contact happens. Example: Eye + Visible form + Eye-consciousness = Eye-contact. Every second we have contacts through our six doors.7. VEDANA (Feeling / Sensation) Because of Phassa, Vedana arises. After every contact, a feeling arises. And there are only three types of feeling: pleasant feeling (Sukha Vedana), unpleasant feeling (Dukkha Vedana), and neither-pleasant-nor-unpleasant feeling (Upekkha Vedana). When you see a beautiful flower, pleasant feeling. When you hear a harsh word, unpleasant feeling. This is a very critical point. Up to here, it is automatic. You cannot stop it.8. TANHA (Craving / Thirst) Because of Vedana, Tanha arises. This is where we get trapped. When a pleasant feeling arises, we want more of it. We crave for it. This is Kama Tanha. When an unpleasant feeling arises, we want to get rid of it. We crave for non-existence. This is Vibhava Tanha. When a neutral feeling arises, we crave to stay in existence. This is Bhava Tanha. This is the most dangerous link. The Buddha said Tanha is the cause of Dukkha in the Second Noble Truth.Example: You taste ice cream
