-MKII included with Midway Arcade Treasures 2 disc for the PS2- And finally.... the true arcade perfect version for the home console!! This version finishes all others, it is flawless. You'd swear you were playing the arcade version. It's identical. Just look at how good it looks and listen to how good it sounds, that's some crispety crunchety authentic 90's nostaligic goodness right there man! It's drop dead gorgeous! It makes me wanna lick the screen, just look at it! They weren't playin around with this port. This was released in 2004, a full 10 years after MKII first came to the home consoles. It was bundled in with some other MIDWAY classics (including an arcade perfect version of MK3 and Primal Rage)! The bundle was called Midway Arcade Treasures 2 for PS2, Xbox, and GameCube (I've only ever played the PS2 version as seen here, but I assume it's perfect on all the other consoles as well)? So I had to wait 10 years for a proper arcade perfect version to play at home.. sorta... I actually ended up playing the actual arcade version on MAME before then. However, that's not the point - the point is this is the only version for a home console I know of that's equal in every way to the arcade version. Sure the music cuts off on the end credits for some reason.. and due to the start button doubling as a Pause/Menu button, random select (Up+Start) cannot be used and Smoke cannot be fought (Down+Start at the Portal stage while getting a Dan Forden shouting out the: "Toasty!" message). Also it runs a bit quicker at a pure 60 fps compared to the 54.7 fps of the arcade version, which would be even more noticeable for those in Europe who are used to PAL speed, but I like it, it's like MKII Turbo Hyper Fighting almost hehe. And most people wouldn't notice that, it's not that big a difference really. And young people who are used to modern speeds would prefer it I'm sure. But other than that, it's 100% perfect. Every home version has some issues, I'm just glad the issues here are so minor as to be forgotten about compared to the horrendous, in your face, intrusive issues that plague all other home versions. If I didn't show you the PS2 bios splash and the game intro you wouldn't even know this wasn't the arcade version, it's that good! Way better than anything that's ever come before or since that I know of. However, the MS DOS PC version of MKII was extremely good, especially for it's time being released in 1995! It was for sure the best home version at the time, long before this version was released. But I didn't have a PC until around 2003 or so unfortunately. So I can't really comment much on that version. But I did own this PS2 version and man does it look good! Better than the MS DOS, Playstation, Saturn, 32X, Genesis, and SNES versions. And in fact, it actually looks better than most people's MAME version since most people don't configure MAME to look it's best (just sayin). The new MKAK (Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection) version for the PC, PS3, and 360 may be a lot more well known, but it's not in the same league as this. MKAK is crap, it has a ton of major issues. However, this Midway Arcade Treasures 2 version is perfect! The perfect port on the perfect console, PS2 ftw. (yeah I know Midway Arcade Treasures 2 came out on other consoles, but I haven't tried those ones. Didn't need to, PS2 version was good enough :-)
