So if you're looking for a place to stay with your family in Kyoto, this may be a good option if it meets your criteria. As mentioned in the video, Rinn, invited us to stay at their Machiya, a traditional Kyoto wooden townhouse. Kyoto’s Machiyas are natural wooden townhouses, first built when Kyoto was still the capital of Japan between 1000’s and the 1200’s, and are known for their unique elongated design and narrow entrance, called unagi no nedoko, a place where eels sleep, which was direct a result of laws that taxed property owners based on the width of their entrance.
