In 648, a Chinese envoy travelling to the court of King Harshavardhana was ambushed in north India. He escaped across the Himalayas to Tibet and came back with an army of Tibetan and Nepali soldiers. In those days India and China had no border at all; Tibet lay between them. Today Tibet is under Chinese control, the two countries share a boundary of about 3,500 km that they have never agreed on, Beijing calls Arunachal Pradesh "South Tibet" and keeps issuing Chinese names for its places, and in 2026 Indian and Chinese troops stood face to face in Arunachal even as Xi Jinping visited New Delhi. How did a red line drawn by a British officer in 1914 become the root of the dispute? How did a Major of the Assam Rifles bring Tawang under India without firing a shot? Why did the Dalai Lama flee Lhasa disguised as a soldier, and who threw tomatoes at Mao's portrait in Bombay? What did a Brigadier hear before his brigade was overrun in 1962, why did India turn down "Mao's smile", and what are the Pangong Tso "fingers"? And what did the ITBP chief say about Arunachal that led to his video being taken down? In this episode of Kissa, Bhupendra Soni tells the full story of the India-China border dispute: from the Silk Route and Zorawar Singh's Tibet campaign to the Simla Convention and the McMahon Line, Panchsheel, the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama, the 1962 war as told in Brigadier John Dalvi's "Himalayan Blunder", the clashes from Nathu La to Galwan, China's border villages and infrastructure, the renaming of places in Arunachal and the question of the next Dalai Lama. It ends with a fact-based answer to one question: has China entered Indian territory?
