Burkina Faso has reported a major military operation against armed terrorist groups, with the country’s forces and Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland (VDPs) claiming significant battlefield gains and the recovery of weapons and ammunition.
But is this really the end of the story?
Behind the reported victory lies a much bigger mystery.
Where do armed groups operating across the Sahel get their weapons, ammunition, motorcycles and supplies? Who keeps the supply networks alive? And can military victories alone bring lasting peace to communities that have spent years living under fear and insecurity?
Under Captain Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso has increasingly relied on a military-first strategy and greater involvement from local volunteers. Supporters see this as a powerful move toward national sovereignty and self-defence. Critics, however, continue to raise concerns about accountability and the wider consequences of the conflict.
In this video, Africa Daily Watch looks beyond the battlefield and explores the difficult questions surrounding Burkina Faso’s security strategy, the VDPs, the mystery of insurgent supply networks, human-rights concerns and the future of peace in the Sahel.
Was this a turning point for Burkina Faso—or simply another battle in a much longer war?
Watch until the end and tell us what you think in the comments.
