It is one of the churches of the Saint Thomas Christian community, which traces its origins to the evangelical activity of Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century. In 1772, a foreign bishop named Mar Gregorios consecrated a local monk named Kattumangatt Kurien.The new bishop took the title Mar Cyril Koorilos. The main Malankara leadership opposed this ordination and tried to suppress Mar Cyril with the help of local rulers and British authorities.  Mar Cyril moved north to Anjoor and Thozhiyoor, which lay outside the reach of his rivals .A local Muslim chieftain named Hydrosekutty Moopan respected Mar Cyril's devotion and gave him a coconut grove.
