12,300 years ago, a hunter sat by a fire on the edge of a marsh in what is now Utah. He roasted a few ducks, ate, and then pulled a dry, dark plant out of his pouch. It did not grow anywhere near that marsh. He had carried it from the mountains.
So when did ancient humans really start smoking? The answer is stranger than you think. Your ancestors breathed smoke for hundreds of thousands of years, whether they wanted to or not. The real question is when smoke stopped being a problem and became a pleasure.
In this video we follow the clues that smoke leaves behind: a tooth, a handful of seeds, and a wooden bowl. We look at cave dwellers, Neanderthals, Ice Age hunters, mountain funerals, passing pipes around a fire, and the machine that turned a ritual into a habit.
