Norman Connors - You Are My Starship (feat. Michael Henderson)

Norman Connors' song You Are My Starship is a lush 1976 soul jazz ballad about devotion, emotional security and seeing a loved one as a guiding light. The starship image gives the song a dreamy, almost cosmic quality, while Michael Henderson's restrained lead vocal keeps it intimate and deeply romantic. Rather than relying on dramatic storytelling, the song creates its effect through atmosphere: warm bass, soft keyboards, strings, backing vocals and Gary Bartz's soprano saxophone all contribute to its floating late-night sound. Although commonly filed under Norman Connors' name, the featured singer is Michael Henderson, who also wrote the song and played bass. Connors was primarily a jazz drummer, arranger, producer and bandleader, and his recordings often brought together jazz musicians with emerging soul vocalists. You Are My Starship became one of the clearest examples of that crossover between sophisticated jazz instrumentation and smooth romantic R&B. The track appeared on Connors' 1976 album You Are My Starship, released by Buddah Records and recorded in New York at Electric Lady and Sound Ideas studios. The album also featured Phyllis Hyman and reached the upper levels of the R&B and jazz album charts. You Are My Starship became Connors' biggest crossover hit, reaching No. 4 on the US R&B chart and No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. You Are My Starship is an elegant expression of committed affection. Its lyrics are romantic with an emphasis is on trust, comfort, care and finding strength in another person. That sincerity, combined with Henderson's smooth delivery and Connors' refined production, has helped You Are My Starship remain an enduring quiet storm and classic soul favorite.
