The Edakkal Caves are a pair of prominent prehistoric rock shelters situated 1,200 meters above sea level on Ambukutty Mala in the Wayanad district of Kerala. Technically massive rock fissures rather than true caves, they are uniquely formed by a colossal boulder wedged between two larger rocks. The site is globally famous for its ancient petroglyphs—intricate rock engravings that date back to the Neolithic era, around 6,000 BCE. These rare prehistoric carvings depict human and animal figures, ancient weaponry, and geometric symbols, offering a rare glimpse into the region's earliest human settlements. As the only known site with Stone Age carvings in South India, it is a highly popular trekking and archaeological destination protected by the Kerala Department of Archaeology.
