With KH4 on the horizon, one thing that stands out about the series today is the lack of Spin offs. Kingdom Hearts spin-offs like Birth by Sleep, 358/2 Days, Dream Drop Distance, Chain of Memories and Re:coded used to be a huge part of the Kingdom Hearts series. But after Kingdom Hearts III, these non-numbered games largely disappeared.
For years, these games filled the gaps between numbered Kingdom Hearts releases, experimented with new gameplay ideas, expanded characters and storylines, and in many cases became essential parts of the overall story.
So... what happened?
In this video, I look back at the era of Kingdom Hearts spin-offs and non-numbered games, why so many released on handheld consoles like the GBA, Nintendo DS, PSP and Nintendo 3DS, why that approach may have changed, and whether smaller Kingdom Hearts games could return during the road to Kingdom Hearts IV and beyond.
I also get into one of the biggest problems with bringing them back: some of the same things that made games like Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance so important also helped make Kingdom Hearts intimidating for new players.
Should Kingdom Hearts bring these games back? And if they do, should they continue the main story or become smaller, more self-contained adventures?
Let me know what you think!
