To truly understand Kendo, "Kata" (forms) is an indispensable part. The most familiar set today is naturally the "Nippon Kendo Kata" established by the All Japan Kendo Federation. However, before "Nippon Kendo Kata" came into being, the Japanese police system had already developed a crucial set of sword forms—"Keishiryu Bokutachi no Kata" (警視流木太刀形).
This set of forms is not only a major precursor in the development of modern Nippon Kendo Kata, but it also preserves many classical sword techniques, footwork, and stances (kamae) from ancient schools (koryu). Many of these movements are quite rare in today's Kendo dojos.
In this episode, Sixers Station takes you back to the Meiji era to explore the origin and background of Keishiryu. Based on rare late-19th-century historical documents, we break down the ten forms of Keishiryu Bokutachi no Kata step by step:
04:50 01 | Hasso — Jikishinkage-ryu
06:07 02 | Henka — Kurama-ryu
06:49 03 | Hatten-giri — Tsutsumi Hozan-ryu
07:41 04 | Maki-otoshi — Tatsumi-ryu
08:50 05 | Gedan no Tsuki — Hokushin Itto-ryu
09:39 06 | A-un — Asayama Ichiden-ryu
11:11 07 | Ichi-ni no Tachi — Jigen-ryu
12:06 08 | Uchi-otoshi — Shinto Munen-ryu
13:18 09 | Ha-ore — Yagyu-ryu
14:07 10 | Kurai-zume — Kyoshin Meichi-ryu
We will closely examine each form and compare the elements that differ significantly from modern Kendo. Among them is an intriguing phenomenon: four out of the ten forms feature the ishiki (居敷 - crouching/kneeling) posture. Why was this posture, so uncommon in modern Kendo, so prevalent in Keishiryu Bokutachi no Kata?
