In 2025, more than 2,000 earthquakes of seismic intensity 1 or greater were recorded around the Tokara Islands in less than a month, including one that reached intensity 6-lower on the island. So how do 87 people continue living on a remote island where the ground can suddenly begin moving again? Akusekijima is one of the inhabited Tokara Islands south of Kyushu. There are no regular flights, and Ferry Toshima 2 is the island’s main connection to the outside world, carrying people, food, fuel and essential supplies. That dependence becomes critical during periods of repeated seismic activity. Strong or persistent shaking brings concerns about cliffs, landslides, roads and homes, while residents must still care for cattle, attend school, keep the clinic operating and maintain everyday life. But there is another side. Leaving the island is not as simple as driving somewhere safer. Evacuation depends on the harbour, ferry conditions, weather and individual circumstances. During the 2025 earthquake swarm, some residents chose to evacuate to Kagoshima. The same ferry that normally sustains life on Akusekijima became the route away from it—and later, for some, the way home.
