Science Seminar: Project Sparrow: From the field to the lab – A full AI solution for biodiversity

In this NEON Science Seminar, Dr. Zhongqi Miao (Microsoft AI for Good Lab) presents Project Sparrow, an end-to-end AI solution designed to transform biodiversity monitoring by connecting field-based data collection with cloud-based analysis and decision-making. Drawing on real-world deployments and collaborations with conservation practitioners, Dr. Miao demonstrates how Project Sparrow integrates edge computing, wireless sensor networks, satellite communications, and open-source AI tools to enable continuous, remote monitoring of ecosystems and wildlife. The seminar explores how AI-powered infrastructure can help researchers and practitioners overcome the logistical challenges of collecting biodiversity data in remote environments, while supporting scalable conservation efforts through interoperable data systems, model repositories, and user-friendly analytical tools. Dr. Miao also discusses Sparrow Studio, a public platform for managing biodiversity projects, processing camera trap and acoustic data, deploying AI models, and facilitating collaboration across conservation organizations and research communities.
