The sprawling lore of Dota 2 traces back to the Primordial Schism, a catastrophic event where a single, unified mind shattered before the universe even existed. Three of its largest fragments—Radinthul, Diruulth, and Zet—became the central figures of creation, engaging in an endless, destructive war. Desperate to stop the conflict, Zet (the Arc Warden) sealed his irreconcilable siblings inside the Mad Moon and hurled it into space. However, eons later, the prison cracked and shattered, raining the two warring consciousnesses down upon the fledgling world below in the form of Radiant Ore and Direstone. This devastating impact fundamentally altered the planet's magic, corrupted its civilizations, and forced the inhabitants to fight an eternal war on behalf of the two captive gods. Beyond the cosmic struggle of the Ancients, the world of Dota 2 is filled with deeply tragic, grounded histories and localized atrocities. Entire civilizations were erased by vengeful magic, as seen in the sinking of the Isle of Masks, leaving Juggernaut as the sole surviving archive of his people's culture. Other events, like the Sordid Era, were born purely from human desperation, resulting in the brutal persecution and flaying of wandering mages during a thirteen-season drought. Even seemingly heroic transformations carry a grim toll; the powerful Dragon Knight was born only after the ancient Eldwurm Slyrak transferred his soul into the dying knight Davion, forging a bond that requires Davion to join the dragons in death.
