Turn the lamp low, settle back, and fall asleep to the quiet history of one ordinary American night. Tonight we walk a single Main Street in the 1880s, a small railroad town of about 1,000 people, from the closing of the general store all the way down into the whole town asleep under the stars. The mail came to the store, not the house, so every evening the whole town crowded in to a little window at the back, 2 cents a letter. A parlor organ from the mail-order catalog cost around $50, more than a month of the schoolteacher's whole pay. And on one ordinary day in 1883, this town, like every town, somehow had two noons. Subscribe to the channel: @quiethistoricnights In this video, we talk about what an ordinary evening was really like in a small town on the 1880s American prairie, including the general store and its potbellied stove, the credit book that carried a whole county until harvest, the post office window where the town met its mail, the depot and the coming of standard time, the church-basement sociable and the Ladies' Aid, the lodge hall and its quiet insurance, the saloon and the temperance fight, the opera house and the magic-lantern show, the boarding house and the schoolteacher's closely watched life, the family living above the store, the parlor organ and the mail-order wish book, the warming of a child's bed and the making of the parents' bed, the banking of the kitchen range for the night, the night watchman on his round, and the whole lamplit street going dark window by window. 🔔 Subscribe so the next long, quiet night finds you on its own, without your going to look for it. 💬 Comment where you're listening from tonight, and tell me which lamplit room stayed with you the longest. 📢 Share this with anyone who likes to fall asleep to history, on Facebook, Reddit, or a late-night group chat.
