Marcus is forty-two. He runs a firm. He cannot sleep. This is not anxiety. This is something older.
Concept: shadow
Modern dilemma: midlife collapse of the successful professional
References: CW 9i §77 | Hollis "Finding Meaning in the Second Half of Life
Marcus is forty-two. He runs a firm of thirty-eight people. By every measure his life is a success. He cannot sleep. His wife says she does not recognise him. This is not anxiety. This is something older. Carl Jung had a name for it. What collapses in Marcus is not his career. What collapses is the structure that has carried him there. To understand why, we need a single concept. The concept Jung called the shadow. Not the shadow of pop psychology. Not your repressed darkness as a slogan. The shadow as Jung described it in nineteen fifty-one in Aion.
