As per the records made available, the 1407 m long Sone Barrage has 69 bays, which includes 9 under-sluice bays. The under-sluice gates are of size 18.30 m x 5.01 m, whereas the other gates are of size 18.30 m x 4.40 m. There is a Head Regulator on Eastern Link Canal, with 4 gates of 7.905 m x 2.88 m..On the right bank, there are two Western Head Regulators with 7 bays of a gate size of 7.905 m x 2.88 m. The three main link canal system, connected with barrage commands a GCA of 7,96,000 hectares and a CCA of 6,86,000 hectares of fertile land of present Rohtas, Bhojpur, Kaimur, Buxar, Aurangabad, Gaya, Arwal & Patna districts of the state of Bihar. The river originates from Amarkantak high lands in the Maikala range of hills in Bilaspur district of Madhya Pradesh at an elevation of around 640 m. The location of the origin is known as Sonebhadra. The river debouches in the river Ganga near Patna in Bihar. The total length of the river is 784 km, and it flows approximately 500 km in MP, 82 km in Uttar Pradesh, and 202 km in Bihar. The important tributaries of the Sone river are Rihand, Kanhar, Ghaghar, and Koel. The total catchment area spans 71,259 sq. km. The river, being wide and shallow, leaves disconnected pools of water during summer (lean period). The Rihand Barrage was constructed in the upstream catchment of the river Rihand in 1962, and the Bansagar Barrage in MP was commissioned in 2008. Sone Barrage is situated in the Rohtas district of Bihar and has been constructed across the Sone River at Indrapuri, 14 km from Dehri-on-Sone Rly. Station. A view of the Sone Barrage is shown in Photo 4.1. The Barrage has been inspected in October-November 2013 by an Expert Committee set up by WRD, Bihar under the chairmanship of former E-I-C, WRD, Bihar which has submitted a safety review report in February 2014.Catchment Area at Barrage site (km2) : 71259

The history of the Indrapuri Barrage, also known as the Sone Barrage, is closely associated with the development of irrigation in southern Bihar. The foundation of the Sone irrigation system was laid during the British period with the construction of the Dehri Anicut across the Son River in about 1873–74, from which canals on both sides of the river supplied water to large agricultural areas. With the passage of time, however, the old Dehri Anicut became increasingly inadequate because of siltation, structural and operational problems, creating the need for a modern and more effective headworks. A new barrage site was therefore selected at Indrapuri, approximately 8 km upstream of Dehri, and construction was undertaken during the 1960s. Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) was responsible for the construction of this major structure; HCC records identify Indrapuri as one of its landmark barrage projects of that period. The barrage is approximately 1,407 metres long irrigation water for the extensive Sone Canal System. Along with the barrage, Eastern and Western Link Canals were developed to connect the new headworks with the existing main canal network. Eastern and Western Link Canals had also been completed, making irrigation water available through the new system and providing irrigation benefits to approximately 10.5 lakh acres in the districts then identified as Patna, Gaya and Shahabad. The Bihar Government’s official tourism information identifies 1968 as the year in which the barrage was commissioned. There is, however, a historical reference in local accounts to an inauguration ceremony on 21 November 1965 by the then Union Home Minister Gulzarilal Nanda, which appears to refer to an inauguration stage of the project rather than the final commissioning date reported by official technical sources. Thus, the most appropriate historical description is that the Indrapuri Barrage was constructed during the 1960s and commissioned in 1968, marking a major transformation from the old Dehri Anicut system to a modern barrage and canal network. The project became one of the most important irrigation structures of Bihar and continues to play a major role in regulating Son River water and supplying the Sone Canal System.
