Getting improv notes can affect your nervous system, and your brain. We look at why your brain rewrites feedback and how you can separate the actual content from the emotional delivery (aka, the framing). When a coach gives you feedback after a scene, your brain often processes their tone and body language before the actual words. This means you might react to a perceived threat before you even hear the advice. We explore a metacognitive approach to receiving improv notes that helps you manage this early physiological response. You will learn an exercise to isolate objective facts, and we cover why writing down your feedback immediately can prevent rumination. Host Jen deHaan explores how our unique brain wiring affects how we learn, perform, and create. Now expanding to cover the "body" side of the brain-body connection! We're digging into why we freeze up, how to find our flow, and using "nervous system" concepts to become better improvisers. Whether you are neurodivergent (ADHD, Autistic, etc.) or just want to understand your own creative process better, this show is for you. This podcast was created, written, and is hosted by Jen deHaan. All creative graphics made (by a human!) Jen deHaan. Jen deHaan is an autistic and ADHD performer and spends a lot of time thinking about how neurodivergent brains handle the demands of professional life, creative performance, and just getting through a Tuesday. Her background is a unique collection of things: close to 30 years teaching creative technology and instructional design, improv and acting coaching, fitness instruction, a BFA, and a bunch of certifications. Jen is certified in polyvagal informed approaches (and soon the Community Resilience Model), and completed graduate studies in Developing Healthy Communities from Tufts University. She's building education and community around nervous system regulation that actually accounts for neurodivergent experience, and is the founder of StereoForest Studio that creates and produces podcasts, audio dramas, and educational shows.
