Yene Konjo (Amharic for “My beautiful one”) by Rob Matare is an Ethiopian afropop love song in English and Amharic, one of the warmest songs about meeting her family, with coffee and a welcome in Addis Ababa. From the album Call Your Brother.

It is morning in Addis Ababa and the coffee is on the fire. She roasts the beans and the whole house knows it: buna smoke and frankincense curl up toward the ceiling, popcorn waits on the tray and the neighbours stop by. Then she pours the first cup, and she pours it for him. Later it is Timket, with white cloth everywhere in the streets, and she holds his hand in the Addis air. Her mother smiles and tells her, eshi (okay, yes): you chose him. The family breaks into eskista, shoulders loose and free, everybody laughing with him, and her grandmother rests a hand on his head and says only, “Eshi, eshi.” All he can see is her.
“Yene konjo, ewedishalehu.” (My beautiful one, I love you.)
The chorus is a simple, repeating promise in Amharic: yene konjo, ewedishalehu, with the family answering eshi. In the verses the song moves between English and Amharic, from the quiet of a kitchen at sunrise to the noise of a festival street, with every detail pointing back to her: anchi yene konjo, all I can see.
A SMALL GUIDE TO THE WORDS
Buna is Ethiopian coffee, and the coffee ceremony, where beans are roasted and the first cup is poured for the guest, is one of the warmest welcomes in Ethiopian culture. Timket is the Ethiopian Epiphany festival, when people dress in white. Eskista is the traditional Ethiopian shoulder dance. Eshi means okay or yes.
WHAT THIS SONG IS ABOUT
This visualizer brings Amharic phrases and an Ethiopian coffee ceremony into a warm afropop love song, celebrating Ethiopian music, family and culture. It is an East African love song about being accepted by your partner's family, the first cup of buna and the joy of a home full of laughter and dancing. It is a love letter to Ethiopian hospitality, where a shared cup of coffee says you belong, and a gentle reminder that being chosen by someone's family can feel just as sweet as being chosen by them.
