or more than two hundred years, a single company in the Zurich suburb of Wallisellen has been grinding the gears that make the modern world run quietly, and almost no one outside the machine tool trade knows its name. This documentary traces the full history of Reishauer, from a hand forge founded by the toolsmith Hans Jakob Däniker in 1788 to the company that now finishes the gears inside a vast share of the world's automatic transmissions and electric vehicle drivetrains. The story begins with an obsession. Reishauer built its reputation on thread cutting tools and thread gauges, the master steel references that told an entire industry whether its work was accurate enough to trust. That fixation on precision eventually forced the company to build its own machines, and in 1928 it produced its first thread grinder. But that machine exposed a deeper problem. It needed gears more accurate than any that existed anywhere, and solving that problem would take fifteen years and consume the whole of the Second World War, as a handful of Swiss engineers refined a process measured in fractions of a hair while the continent outside came apart. The film explains the invention of the Reishauer method, the continuous generating gear grinding process launched with the ZA machine in 1945, and shows in plain terms how a threaded grinding worm meshes with a gear to finish it in a single unbroken motion. That breakthrough is the hidden foundation under the modern automobile, because it made mass produced, quiet running hardened gears economical for the first time. It follows the company through the electronic gearbox of the 1977 RZ300E, the twin spindle machines that dropped cycle times to under ten seconds, the in house circle of competence that produces its own grinding wheels and dressing tools, and the survival of the Swiss machine tool crisis that erased most of Reishauer's domestic rivals. At the center of the story is a corporate war that ran for two decades. The documentary lays out the conflict between the patrician Bodmer family, who controlled the company through a majority stake, and the combative investor Adrian Gasser, who bought nearly half of it through his holding company Lorze and was frozen out of every decision using a mechanism of restricted registered shares. It covers Gasser's avalanche of lawsuits, his invention of the mocking financial instrument he called the Bodmerschein, the Zurich court finding that the company's accounting had been kept unlawfully, the 2013 Swiss Federal Supreme Court judgment that ordered five directors to pay damages, and the settlement that finally valued a single Reishauer share at around sixty thousand francs. The film closes on the electric vehicle era, where near silent motors turned faint gear noise into the industry's newest problem and made Reishauer's oldest strength its greatest advantage, through technologies like low noise shifting, twist control grinding, and the Argus monitoring system that listens to every gear as it is ground.
