The word India comes from a river that now runs almost entirely through Pakistan. This history documentary covers 9,000 years of Pakistan: the Indus Valley Civilization, Alexander the Great, the Mughals, Partition, 1971, the nuclear tests, and the fight over the Indus happening right now.
Seen from space, Pakistan is one green line running from the highest mountains on Earth to the Arabian Sea, with desert on both sides. Around a quarter of a billion people depend on that river. The name Pakistan was invented in 1933, which makes it younger than Mickey Mouse. Yet people were farming this land 4,000 years before the first pyramid.
This documentary follows the complete history of Pakistan: the first farmers and the world's oldest dentistry at Mehrgarh, Mohenjo-daro and Harappa, the undeciphered Indus script, the railway built on 4,000-year-old bricks, the drought that emptied the Indus cities, the Rigveda and the Persian province of Hindush, Taxila and Panini, Alexander and King Porus, Ashoka's edicts, Gandhara and the first images of the Buddha, Muhammad bin Qasim and the Sufi saints, Mughal Lahore and the Badshahi Mosque, Guru Nanak and the Sikh Empire of Ranjit Singh, the British canal colonies, Jinnah, Iqbal and the pamphlet that invented the name Pakistan, the Radcliffe Line and Partition, Kashmir, the Indus Waters Treaty, the 1971 war and the birth of Bangladesh, the nuclear tests of 1998, the floods of 2022, and the 2026 ruling on the Indus Waters Treaty.
Pakistan has survived partition, four wars, three coups and the loss of half its people. But the oldest threat in its history is also the newest one, and it is not an army. It is the river itself.
This documentary is based on archaeological discoveries, peer-reviewed research, and primary historical sources. We aim to bring history to life while staying faithful to the historical record.
