Udupi, located in the state of Karnataka, India, is famous for its Krishna temple and the unique tradition associated with it. According to legend, the idol of Sri Krishna at Udupi, was sculpted by Vishwakarama on instructions of Sri Krishna himself, when Sri Rukmini wanted to see how he looked when he was a small kid. The idol of Sri Krishna was then worshipped by Sri Rukmini, the principal queen of Lord Sri Krishna in Dwaraka, with deep devotion. After Lord Krishna's departure from the mortal world, the city of Dwaraka was submerged by the sea. The idol, along with other relics, was believed to be lost in the ocean. In 13th Century, the Udupi Krishna idol was discovered by Sri Madhwacharyaru, the founder of the Dvaita Vedanta school of philosophy. When a ship carrying a lump of gopi-chandana got caught in a fierce storm in the Arabian Sea and was struggling, Sri Madhwacharyaru waved his hand thereby calming the storm. In gratitude, the sailors offered Sri Madhwacharyaru the large ball of gopi-chandana they were carrying as cargo. On opening the lump, Sri Madhwacharyaru found the beautiful idol of Lord Krishna hidden within it. Sri Madhwacharya installed the idol at the Krishna Matha in Udupi around the year 1238 CE. The idol of Krishna at Udupi is unique because it is installed facing west, rather than the usual east-facing orientation seen in most temples. Sri Krishna Matha temple complex in Udupi is known for its unique architecture and layout. The temple is managed by eight mathas (religious institutions) established by Sri Madhwacharyaru, each taking care of the temple's administration for two years in rotation. The Udupi Krishna idol is central to the worship practices and rituals at the Udupi Sri Krishna Matha. The idol is adorned and worshipped in various forms throughout the day, reflecting the different stages of Krishna's childhood, from Balakrishna (child Krishna) to Santhana Gopala (protector of children).
