These past 2 weeks has been quite the ride in the world of yu-gi-oh, with arguably the worst WCS of all time, with some of the most miserable games ever witnessed live.
Many "pro" players have expressed their disgust with the game's current state, and I'm gonna be honest, it's not looking good for the future of the game, with TOON coming in a month and a half and more than a dozen cards needing to be banned.
Konami just does not understand it's community, what they want or even the mere fact that communication goes a long way.
So i decided to rant about YU-gi-Oh as well, cause negativity brings views, and because i am also quite tired of the direction the game is taking.
Youtube stuff:
Before I Even begin to talk about this, I want to put a disclaimer here, this is not a super well made video, this is just gonna be me ranting about this, if you’re expecting some plato level discussion you’re not gonna get it, I wrote this script in like 3 hours i did not put too much thought Into it, and If im wrong about some things then im wrong, this is just how I currently feel about things. With that out of the way, lets get into the video.
So I’m late to this whole drama thing, i wasn’t intending to do a video about this, in fact i’m in the middle of doing a Metro video right now, i have 2 scripts ready and i’m writing the third one for metro exodus, but i decided to stop and do this. Why? Clout, look at those views baby.
And 2, because I love Yugioh, I love this game, it’s the only card game I play, and last year was already bad enough, in fact these last couple of years have been rough especially in big events, but this year’s World Championship was the straw that broke the camel’s back. By the way what the fuck does that even mean, did someone just put a straw in a camel to drink water out of it?
Anyway, this game has multiple problems, from card design to the company running it, to even the playerbase to a certain extent.
So I’m gonna divide this video into multiple sections. First we will talk about the banlist, because we eed to talk about it, then we will have to talk about a breaking point, I will explain what that means later, and finally, what I would personally do to fix this entire thing, would it actually do anything? Probably not but hey, at this point people are so desperate that even the dumbest solutions might work.
Let’s start with
1- The banlist.
Originally the banlist was meant to be konami’s format fixing tool, meant to allivieate the problems that the format had, allowing new things to compete. As time went on and on, it became clear that it was no longer a Format Fix, but it was, basically, rotation.
Forcing people to play the new and shiny things, except for a couple of archetypes here and there that still show some life, every new banlist the format shifts to whatever is the newest thing that Konami wants to push at that time. It might be something that released 1 month ago, or something that released 2 days before.
Now realistically this is not a problem per se, this is just the basic definition of what a card game is, power creep and business 101.
The problem with the banlist comes down to everyone’s favorite school subject, Math.
Since September 2018, which was when the first link monster was hit, in the form of Knightmare Goblin, Konami has, on average, banned 4 cards per banlist, it’s actually a bit less, but still.
With a few outliers here and there, with a banlist from June 2020 banning 0 cards, in fact it hit no cards at all and just unlimited 3.
A banlist from January 2020 which banned 9 cards, and the emergency banlist that we all know an loved from last year banning a woping 12 cards.
With 4 banlists a year, that’s 16 cards on average banned each year, whether it be cards that are old and are suddenly a problem, to new cards that were overtuned.
Now, if we take those values, and use it for the next banlist, we see a massive, massive problem.
Maybe this is just my opinion, but 4, 5, or even 6 bans would not solve the problem that we have right now, it would need to be an emergency banlist the size of last year’s to at least fix a bit the format, and even then it would probably not be enough.
The average size of the banlist does not, I repeat, it does not allow Konami to fix formats as bad as these, the only thing that it makes is Konami push the problems back, until one day they become unbearable. The perfect example of this as Paul from team APS said, is Firewall dragon. Since day 1 that card was a problem, but it took them 4 months to kill it in the December 2018 banlist. 4 months were people had to suffer what is arguably the most busted monster in the history of the game.
And that’s another massive problem, on top of everything else.
Joseph brings up a good point saying that What is Konami willing to ban when considering floodgates, and this applies to anything really, not just floodgates. Are we going to ban poisonous winds because one day it might be a problem?
