Can a nail tech glue on veneers? An orthodontist reacts to an unlicensed veneer tech arrested in Florida and explains when veneers make sense. Orthodontist Dr. Ben Winters reacts to a commentary video about a Florida beauty bar owner arrested for unlicensed dental work, accused of gluing veneers onto clients' teeth, and to the rise of so-called veneer techs who learn from courses lasting just a few days. He explains that real veneers usually require shaving off tooth structure, and that the glue itself isn't what rots teeth: cracks and gaps around badly placed veneers let food and bacteria in. Nail products and dental materials share some monomers, polymers and light curing, he notes, but that doesn't qualify a nail tech to do dentistry. Filling a hole over existing decay traps the bacteria inside and can lead to a root canal or an abscess. The news report cites an American Dental Association warning that procedures changing teeth, gums or jaws without a dentist's supervision can cause irreversible harm. His rule for veneers: if you like the shape of your teeth, straighten them with braces or aligners and whiten them. If you don't, consider composite bonding first, then a no-prep veneer, and only then traditional veneers. He also explains how an orthodontist differs from a general dentist, and checks that impersonating a dentist is not automatically a federal crime but is a severe state-level crime in every US state. • Traditional veneers usually require shaving down natural tooth structure. • If you like the shape of your teeth, braces or aligners plus whitening come before veneers. • Badly placed veneers leave gaps where bacteria can cause decay and infection. • Fixing botched cheap dental work often costs far more than doing it right.
