One in ten people has always been left-handed — across every culture, every era, and every civilization scientists have ever measured.
Nobody fully knows why evolution locked that number in at exactly ten percent and kept it there for half a million years.
Dr. Akira Wiberg of the University of Oxford led a study of 400,000 people and found the answer is written into four separate genetic regions — none of which work alone.
The brain doesn't even decide handedness first — researchers at Ruhr University Bochum found the spinal cord makes the call as early as eight weeks into gestation.
The same gene variants tied to left-handedness are also linked to the brain asymmetry that gave humans language.
A mathematical model built in 2006 predicted the exact ten percent figure using nothing but cooperation costs and combat advantage.
Prehistoric skull scratch marks going back 1.8 million years show the same ratio that exists today.
By the end, you will understand why the hand you write with was chosen before your first breath — by forces that science is still mapping.
