In this reflective conversation, Next Level LeadersFellows open up about what inspired them to join the fellowship and how the experience has shaped their leadership and advocacy journey.
From a curiosity about school choice after years in higher education, to a faith-driven nudge toward leadership and community change, each fellow shares a unique path into the program. One fellow, coming from a background in social work, describes the fellowship as a natural fit for provoking change. Another reflects on working across three different regions of Alabama and discovering how education varies by community—yet how leadership can rise from anywhere.
The fellows also share personal growth moments, including one who launched a nonprofit during the cohort and is now pursuing grants to further support Black Alabamians for Education. They speak candidly about digging deep, confronting unfamiliar spaces, questioning preconceived notions, and staying informed on the laws and issues affecting children in their communities.
The message is clear: no matter your background, there's a place for you in this work—and the opportunity to grow alongside like-minded leaders with diverse perspectives.
