Fall asleep tonight inside two London houses on the same foggy evening in the 1850s. In one, a Mayfair mansion five storeys tall, a dozen servants and more sleep under the roof, and the wax candles that light a single dinner can cost as much in a week as a poor family pays in rent. A mile away, off the Strand, five or six people share one room at 2 or 3 shillings a week, drawing water from a yard pipe that runs barely an hour a day. The same lamplighter lights the gas over both their doors, and the same night falls on them both. This is a calm, slow, three-hour walk through one London night, from the top of the grand staircase down to the shared bed in the court, and the quiet question underneath it all is which of these two houses held the lonelier sleeper.

In this video, we talk about what a single night was really like inside London's richest and poorest homes in the 1850s, including the dressing of a lady for dinner and the near hour it took, a great dinner carried course by course up from the basement kitchen, the housemaid who rose at half past five to blacklead the grates, the one candle and hoarded coal of a room off the Strand, the lamplighter walking his round from Mayfair into the poor streets, the coffee stalls lit at 4 in the morning, the night soil men and market porters who worked while both houses slept, and the whole household of each home put to bed one by one.
