Before school buses arrived and kids disappeared through the classroom doors, millions of American mothers were already in the kitchen packing lunch. A metal lunchbox, a sheet of wax paper, a sandwich made from whatever was in the pantry, and maybe a small treat tucked into the corner. That simple routine was repeated every morning across America in the 1960s.
