British Tourists Said American Heat Was Nothing… Then They Landed in Texas

There's an argument that's been running for years, and it goes like this. British people say Americans could never survive a British summer, because it isn't the temperature, it's the humidity, and there's no air conditioning anywhere. Americans laugh at this, because thirty-four degrees is a Tuesday in most of the country. Then the World Cup happened, and a few hundred thousand British people landed in Texas and Florida in June. In this video they surrender, one by one. A man in southern Utah says the sun feels a few metres from his face. Another stares at his phone and says his weather app must be lying, because there is no way it's only twenty-eight. Somebody who spent years on the other side of this argument stands in the street and says out loud that the Americans were right. And then the irony lands. Humidity was the British case — the whole argument, for years. Then they walked outside in Houston in June and found out what eighty percent actually feels like at twenty-seven degrees. It wasn't just tourists, either. Professional athletes needed breaks written into the rules of the tournament. There was a booth at a fan festival whose only job was cooling people down. But this video would be dishonest if it stopped there. Somebody who has properly lived on both sides says American weather is ten times worse — not the heat, the whole thing. The rain, the swing between seasons, the extremity of all of it. Britain is grey and mild and stays that way. Here, everything is turned up. Which turns out to be exactly why they end up loving it. By autumn the same people are standing under a red tree telling America it has outdone itself.
