Bai Qi was one of the most formidable generals of China's Warring States period. Serving the state of Qin during the third century BCE, he became known for campaigns that shattered rival armies and helped transform the balance of power across ancient China.
His greatest victory came at the Battle of Changping in 260 BCE, where Qin defeated Zhao in a conflict remembered for its extraordinary human cost. Ancient historical accounts describe the mass execution of surrendered Zhao soldiers, although the traditional casualty figures remain disputed.
But Bai Qi's story was not simply one of military brilliance. His strategic achievements strengthened Qin's expansion, while his eventual downfall exposed the political dangers faced by even the most successful commanders. In 257 BCE, Bai Qi was forced to take his own life according to traditional historical accounts.
His career reveals the relationship between military strategy, state power, human loss, and political obedience during the Warring States era. Qin would eventually unify China in 221 BCE, decades after Bai Qi's death, through a much broader process of conquest and political consolidation.
Explore the rise, victories, and tragic downfall of Bai Qi, the Qin general whose military legacy remains inseparable from the terrible cost of war.
