Melodic Improvisation: The Secret to Playing by Ear

Hi – coming at you live today from Rebel Piano! Today I’m talking about improvisation and why it’s such a big deal when you’re learning to play by ear. There are basically two types: 1. The flashy “clever” kind – loads of pre-learned licks and scales played at high speed 2. Melodic improvisation – the way I do it – thinking in actual musical phrases and hearing the music as you play I’ll show you how the melodic approach works, play a few completely different styles (all equally valid), and explain why this way of improvising makes learning by ear so much easier. Remember – the one thing that’s the same about everyone is that we’re all different! Don’t force yourself into music you don’t enjoy. Find what you like and go with it.
