When a patient visits us for root planing and for scaling of their teeth, the dentist or the hygienist usually cleans their teeth for any plaque, tartar, food debris, as well as calculus, that is tartar. If the tartar is above the gum line or below the gum line, it is the one which decides whether you need root planning or not. If the tartar is above the gum line, the dentist or the hygienist cleans using p the ultrasonic equipment, to remove the tartar as well as the food debris. If the tartar is below the gum line, usually there is an attachment loss that is, the oral tissues are not attached to the teeth and the bone. In this case we need to do root planning. In root planing we usually clean the roots and remove the tartar which is below the gum line. This soothens the root of the teeth and aids in reattachment of these tissues to the tooth as well as the bone. So the dentist after the procedure of scaling and root planing also advice you for the polishing of the teeth, thus is required for reducing the sensitivity of teeth which occurs while using the ultrasonic instruments. These ultrasonic instruments usually remove some micro structure of enamel this causes the sensitivity most of the takes the dentist requires just a single sitting for the procedure, in some cases we may require multiple sittings for scaling and root planning. the dentist may sometimes recommend the usage of local anaesthetic agents which is usually caused by root planning.
