The twenty-second of September, 1943. A fjord in the far north of Norway. Lieutenant Donald Cameron, 27, is steering a submarine 51 feet long with three other men packed in around him. His periscope has filled with water. Ahead, behind a ring of steel nets, lies the German battleship Tirpitz: more than fifty thousand tons. Cameron's boat weighs about thirty. Not long after, he and his crew are standing on Tirpitz's deck as prisoners, drinking hot coffee and schnapps, and looking at their watches. This is Operation Source the way the X-craft crews lived it: more than a week on the end of a tow rope, fifty miles of enemy fjord, the nets, the minutes on the battleship's deck, and the price they paid.
