In 1595 BCE, Babylon — one of the greatest cities of the ancient world — was hit by an attack no one saw coming.
After traveling more than 1,000 kilometres from Anatolia, the Hittite king Mursili I reached Babylon with astonishing speed. The city fell, Hammurabi’s dynasty came to an end, its treasures were taken, and even the sacred statue of Marduk was carried away.
But then something strange happened.
The Hittites did not stay.
They left Babylon behind, creating a power vacuum that would reshape Mesopotamian history and eventually open the door for the rise of the Kassites.
So how did such a powerful city fall so quickly? How did the Hittites reach Babylon with almost no warning? And why did they abandon their greatest prize?
This is the story of one of the boldest raids in ancient history.
