Welcome to the first episode of ALA Store Tours! In this new series, the American Livebearer Association takes you inside aquarium stores around the country to meet the people, see the fish, and explore the businesses that help make the aquarium hobby possible. For our first stop, we visit Water Colors Aquarium Gallery in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Water Colors Aquarium Gallery has been serving aquarists in Grand Rapids since 2015. After quickly outgrowing its original location, the business moved into its current location on Division Avenue in 2020, doubling its space. Today, Water Colors serves West Michigan and beyond with freshwater and saltwater fish, plants, invertebrates, aquariums, and aquarium supplies, with particular specialties in planted and reef aquariums. But Water Colors is about more than simply selling fish. The store emphasizes healthy, sustainable livestock and responsible aquarium keeping. Its staff is trained in proper husbandry, and Water Colors says every fish entering the store goes through a data-backed quarantine process lasting at least 2–4 weeks, during which the fish are observed, treated for potential disease, and conditioned on high-quality foods. Education and community are also important parts of the Water Colors philosophy. The team produces educational content through its YouTube channel and podcast, works with local aquarium clubs including the Grand Valley Aquarium Club, and supports local fish breeders whenever possible.
