In the middle of the night with the lamp gone out An angel stood by the bed And Joseph woke with his heart in his throat And the words still ringing in his head Arise (arise), and take the young child And his mother, and go Flee into Egypt and stay there Until the Lord lets you know Herod will seek the young child Herod is already on the way So don't wait for the morning Don't wait for the day Arise, and take the young child Take Him by night Wrap Him in your coat against the cold And keep Him out of sight Down the road to Egypt Under the stars so wild Run, Joseph, run Arise, and take the young child He woke her with a hand on her shoulder She was up before he spoke He loaded the donkey by feel in the dark And he left the door half open They went out past the sleeping houses Past the well and the gate And the road ran south into the desert And the night was getting late Herod will seek the young child Herod is already on the way So don't wait for the morning Don't wait for the day Arise, and take the young child Take Him by night Wrap Him in your coat against the cold And keep Him out of sight Down the road to Egypt Under the stars so wild Run, Joseph, run Arise, and take the young child And the One who made the desert Slept on His mother's chest And the One who never sleeps at all Was watching over the rest Arise, and take the young child Take Him by night Wrap Him in your coat against the cold And keep Him out of sight Down the road to Egypt Under the stars so wild Run, Joseph, run Arise, and take the young child And they were safe By the morning light
