Here is Johnathan King singing his 1965 hit: "Everyone's Gone to the Moon" on the BBC TV show: “Top of the Pops”. It was written & produced by Jonathan and was released in 1965 while he was still a 20-year-old undergraduate at University of Cambridge UK. It reached # 4 in the UK and #17 in the US on The Billboard Hot 100.
It was released in the UK on Decca Records and on Parrot Records in the US and Canada.
I had this track on a British Invasion compilation LP: “The Greatest Hits from England” in stereo, released on Parrot Records in 1966. This track was always one of my favorites. I was only 10 when it hit the AM airwaves in the US. I can still remember the 1st time I heard it.
Top of the Pops (TOTP) was a BBC TV British music chart program. It ran weekly for 42 1/2 years from January 1, 1964 thru July 30, 2006, becoming the world's longest running weekly music show.
I never cared for the original stereo mix. There wasn’t much stereo about it. The only thing that was “stereo” was his vocal, having a “duophonic” stereo effect using a delay [most likely an Echoplex]. The orchestra, drums & bass were all panned mono, washed out with a ton of slow stereo reverb.
Having been recorded and mastered on very sterile 1st generation transistorized solid-state equipment of that era gave the song an eerie ethereal feel.
For my mix, I used a mono version. I kept the vocal mono and removed the horrible reverb [although it still bled through in a few spots]. I put a stereo effect on the strings, brought out the rhythm guitar more, panned the drums right and kept the bass centered.
Technical Information:
I used SPLEETER v2.4 to separate the components [Vocals, Drums, Bass & Orchestra] into 4 separate tracks. I used iZotope RX-7 to remove the horrible plate-reverb from Johnathan’s vocal. Adobe Audition was used for Dynamic Range restoration, EQ and final mixdown. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
Enjoy my MONO-to-STEREO remix of one of my favorite British Invasion pop hits: "Everyone's Gone to the Moon" by Jonathan King.
