What happens when scientists explore a part of the deep sea that has barely been seen before? In Argentina's Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon, researchers discovered 57 marine species new to science, five new genera, and an extraordinary hidden world beneath the Atlantic Ocean. More than 2,500 meters below the surface, an underwater robot filmed Loki, a bizarre horned sea cucumber. But this deep-sea creature was only the beginning of a much bigger discovery. During a 2025 scientific expedition, researchers used the remotely operated vehicle SuBastian to explore the mysterious unseen ocean off Argentina's coast. Its cameras revealed cold-water coral reefs, strange underwater ecosystems, deep-sea animals, and marine life surviving in complete darkness. Then, in July 2026, scientists examined specimens collected during the expedition and identified 57 potentially new species and five new genera. Among the discoveries were 20 new species of copepods, tiny crustaceans that most people have never heard of. Even more remarkably, researchers had examined only about 10% of the collected copepod samples during their workshop. So what could be hiding in the remaining 90%? In this Deep Time Files documentary, discover: • Loki, the mysterious horned sea cucumber filmed at 2,577 meters. • The viral "Patrick Star" sea star and why it wasn't actually a new species. • The discovery of 57 new marine species and five new genera. • Why tiny deep-sea copepods could hold some of the expedition's biggest scientific surprises. • Cold-water coral reefs and the possibility of an entirely new coral family. • How ocean currents and underwater canyons create extraordinary deep-sea habitats. • The shocking discovery of plastic pollution and human debris thousands of meters beneath the ocean. From marine biology and ocean exploration to undiscovered species and the mysteries of the deep Atlantic, this expedition reveals just how much of Earth's oceans remains poorly understood. Subscribe to Deep Time Files for cinematic science documentaries about ocean mysteries, extraordinary wildlife, prehistoric life, evolution, natural history, and the hidden history of our planet. SCIENTIFIC NOTE The 57 species were identified as new to science during a specialist workshop; formal taxonomic descriptions and additional research may still be required. The 10% figure refers specifically to the collected copepod samples examined during that workshop, not to the entire deep ocean. #DeepSea #OceanDiscovery #DeepSeaCreatures
