Konstantin Rokossovsky argued with Zhukov in the snow outside Moscow and with Stalin himself in 1944. Every argument was about two things: the ground under his troops and the hour on the clock.
In November 1941 his 16th Army stood astride the Volokolamsk highway, and the line came to rest at Kryukovo, about 40 km from the Kremlin, after his request to step back behind the Istra reservoir was refused by telegram. In July 1943, on the northern face of the Kursk salient, his Central Front guns opened at 02:20, minutes before Model's Ninth Army was due to fire. And in June 1944, at Bobruisk, he wanted two blows where Moscow planned one, the second sent through the Polesie marshes the Germans had written off as impassable for tanks. Three decisions, played from the smallest to the boldest, on terrain and timing.
Move #3 — The Istra line, November–December 1941: a road, a reservoir and a refusal.
Move #2 — Kursk northern face, July 1943: the counter-barrage at 02:20.
Move #1 — Bobruisk, June 1944: two blows through the marsh, on log roads and bog shoes.
Checkmate Generals plays back one WWII commander's three legendary tactical moves like a chess game on the map: the opening, the trap, the checkmate. Each move unfolds on animated parchment war maps with public-domain archival footage and plain-spoken narration. No tables of dates — just the move, why it worked, and what the enemy missed.
Three, two, or one? Tell us in the comments which move was his masterstroke, and which general should take the board next.
