*LAY IT DOWN | A Warrior's Psalm — The Widow's Lament* For the warriors who gave everything, and for those who must carry on without them. Of all the songs in *Psalms for Warriors*, this one is perhaps the most difficult and personal for me. "Lay It Down" grew from a tragic mission I experienced while serving in Okinawa, Japan, and from the many military funerals I attended throughout my 21 years as a U.S. Air Force Pararescueman. Losing a friend or fellow service member is difficult. But witnessing the grief of a spouse mourning the person they loved is something that has stayed with me. There's a particular sound to that kind of heartbreak. The cries of a husband or wife standing over a casket, struggling to say goodbye, are sounds I have never forgotten. Over the years, I've often reflected on the cost of sacrifice—not simply for those who give their lives, but for the families who must continue living without them. I wrote this psalm from the perspective of a grieving spouse. I cannot pretend to fully understand what it means to lose a husband or wife in that way. But I have witnessed enough of that suffering to know it deserves our compassion, remembrance, and respect. The song wrestles with questions that grief often leaves unanswered. If this is glory, why does it feel like loss? If this is victory, why does it burn? It also explores something I've struggled to understand about faith: how we continue to trust God when our hearts are broken and the sacrifice seems almost unbearable. The anger in this song is intentional. So is the sorrow. Sometimes faith isn't a quiet acceptance of what has happened. Sometimes it's crying out to God in desperation, asking why, and pleading for Him to remain with us. "Lay It Down" is my small tribute to the spouses, families, and loved ones who have endured the loss of someone who served. To the warriors who gave everything, and to those who still carry their memory: I see you. Your sacrifice is sacred. Rest. And to anyone who has experienced this kind of loss, I hope these words might offer some small measure of understanding, encouragement, or peace. *ABOUT THE BOOK* "Lay It Down" was inspired by A Warrior's Psalm and the Warrior Oath for Sacrificial Love from my book, *Words for Warriors: A PJ's Guide to Guts and Glory*. It is part of *Psalms for Warriors*, an 11-song AI-assisted musical companion to the book, exploring the struggles, virtues, and spiritual questions that shape our lives. I'm sharing this music freely in the hope that it might mean something to someone who needs to hear it.
