Rajagala is an important archaeological and Buddhist heritage site located in the Ampara District of eastern Sri Lanka. Archaeological research indicates that the area was known in ancient times as “Girikumbhila.” The word kumbhila is a Pali term associated with the crocodile, and the ancient name is believed to have been connected with the shape of the rock. This place has built by King Langjatissa.
Rajagala contains the remains of a large ancient Buddhist monastic complex, including rock caves, stupas, image houses, stone pillars, stairways and other architectural remains. These remains provide valuable evidence about the organisation of Buddhist monasteries and the lives of monks in ancient Sri Lanka.
The stone inscriptions found at Rajagala are particularly important because they provide historical information relating to religious activities, donations and monastic life. Archaeological research, excavations and conservation activities have been carried out at the site, and the Department of Archaeology established an archaeological training centre at Rajagala in 2011.
**Therefore, Rajagala is an important site for understanding Sri Lanka’s ancient Buddhist monastic tradition, archaeology, architecture and epigraphic heritage.
