Is cremation a sin? If a body is burned to ashes, can God still raise it? Christians quote 1 Corinthians 6:19 on one side and Genesis 3:19 on the other — so what does the Bible actually say?
A man sits in a funeral home with a form in front of him: burial or cremation. His mother asked to be cremated. His uncle, a retired pastor, says she deserves a Christian burial. In this study we walk from the first grave in the Bible to the empty tomb: Abraham's cave at Machpelah, Joseph's bones, the night the men of Jabesh-gilead burned King Saul's body, Lazarus, the verses most often used against cremation — and what happened at Lyon in AD 177, when Roman officials threw the martyrs' ashes into the Rhône and said, "Now let us see if they will rise again."
