Come with me to Nafpaktos for the celebrations marking the 455th anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto. The streets and harbor were filled with people, music, and excitement. I’ll take you to a Spanish cultural performance, the parade through town, and the dramatic reenactment at the Venetian Harbor. The next morning, I joined the commemorations at church and followed the procession to the harbor, where wreaths were placed in the water in memory of those who lost their lives. I also visited the Botsaris Museum for the special exhibition “Nafpaktos: Siege and Liberation,” featuring historical material from Greece’s General State Archives. While translating the speeches, I was struck by the difference in how the commanders spoke to their rowers and the promises of freedom they made. It made me think about the individual people caught up in this enormous battle, and it gave me an even deeper appreciation for the story being told here. I’ve done my best to translate the original Greek narration and poetry as accurately as possible while preserving their meaning and emotion. Please forgive any small translation errors. If you’re thinking of visiting Nafpaktos, October is a wonderful time to come. The Battle of Lepanto celebrations take place early in the month, and later in October the town comes alive again for the traditional bazaar around the feast of Agios Dimitrios, with food, market stalls, and a festive atmosphere, so plan ahead and reserve your accommodation early. #travel #fyp #history #Nafpaktos #GreekCulture #BattleOfLepanto #Greece #celebrations
